Children’s clothes, like any other clothes, have changed over time. Children’s clothing did not used to be as substantial as it today. Years ago, children’s clothing did not get as much attention as it does now. Clothing for the babies and young was seen as something that had to last for years and be used by both the boys and the girls in the family. It was also supposed to grow with the child as a way to make the clothing last. It wasn’t until recently that children’s clothing began to get the same amount of attention to detail as clothing for adults.

Hundreds of years ago, children’s clothing was unisex and very basic. Both boys and girls wore the same dress style outfit. The outfits were made this way to allow for easy access when changing and the baby could grow for a long time while still wearing the same outfit. Because the outfits were usually plain cotton they could be switched out for boys and girls with no problem. Only the extremely rich families in these ancient times could afford to buy fancy clothing for their babies. Most often the children’s clothing was saved to be used by the next baby in the family.

In modern times, children’s clothing started to get more personality but it was still rather basic. Children’s clothing was made of cheap easy to care for materials. The clothing was either made or bought larger than was needed so the child could grow into it. The extra length in the clothing was hemmed under and as the child grew then the hems would be let out and lowered. There were not very many children’s specialty stores 30 or 40 years ago. Most of the children’s clothing was bought in department stores or was made by mothers who knew how to sew and make clothing.

Children’s clothing today is just as detailed and trendy as adult clothing. A trip to any mall will show multiple specialty stores just for children where clothing in all of the hottest trends can be found in smaller sizes. Even the big box retailers feature more children’s clothing with personality. There is still cheaper basic children’s clothing to be found but it is not what is normally seen on children when they make the trip to town. It is also less common for parents to buy their child’s clothing larger than it needs to be and hand-me-downs are not as obvious, if they are used at all.
