Kids live pretty carefree lives. Their basic needs are cared for by others, and they just have to worry about learning the ropes of life: relationships, responsibilities, and socializing. Believe it or not, children's fashion is an important part of socializing. The fact is that kids who dress "differently" often get picked on or ostracized. By choosing the right fashions for your child, you're training him or her to respect the cultural norms for fashion and helping him or her to learn enough about style in order to form his or her own opinions. Here are some fashion do's and don'ts for children.

Do pay attention to what other children are wearing. If you see a lot of children wearing a certain style of clothing, chances are that it's a popular style, and you can't go wrong purchasing that style for your child. But don't spend too much money on children's fashion. It's true that children outgrow fashion almost as quickly as the fashions change, so you don't want to throw your money away on clothes that your child will only wear for a season at best. There are plenty of stores that sell fashionable but affordable clothing. These fashion do's and don'ts don't have to bust your budget.

Do listen to your child when he or she asks about a certain children's fashion. If your child says that everyone in their classroom is wearing this new t-shirt or that new style of jeans, hear them out. Don't immediately dismiss them because you don't like the style yourself. Remember, you ultimately want to help your child to develop a style all his own, and you won't help him to do that if you keep stifling his creative flair. In this way, fashion do's and don'ts can actually help you to improve your relationship with your child as well.

Do keep on the cutting edge of fashion by reading magazines and looking at catalogues. You can easily keep up with the latest in children's fashion by surfing the internet and seeing what's selling at popular stores. But don't cave in to fashion trends that make you uncomfortable. There's a difference between a style that you don't like and one that you think is inappropriate for children. Stand on your principles. That's part of your job as a parent. These fashion do's and don'ts are not hard and fast rules, but guides that will help you to navigate the tricky world of kids' fashions.
