At any given time you may find a different list of the top 10 snowboard jackets. It may be the top 10 for that particular company, country, year, or month. It is difficult to tell from the simple fact that they are on a list if they are really the best available. However, there some features that no jacket should be able to make it onto any kind of top 10 list without. If a jacket is considered a top 10 in any form, it should have some specific, practical characteristics at a minimum. These include a mid to high breathability rating, a mid to high waterproof rating, thick lining, snug fit all around and from top to bottom, and proper length to hit mid hip.

Top 10 snowboard jackets should have a breathability rating of at least 8K to 10K. This means it can absorb 8,000 to 10,000 grams of water from the air, meaning it will keep you dry for a while during a moderate snowboarding session. These jackets usually hit a good balance between cost and functionality. The same is true of waterproof ratings. A good middle of the road 8K to 10K rating will strike a good balance between what is needed for the casual snowboarder and cost effectiveness.

The top 10 snowboard jackets keep the wearer warm. To do this, they must have a moderately thick lining made of a heat retaining material. The lining along with the waterproof and breathability ratings are very much what make the jacket what it is meant to be, which is a piece of outwear to retain warmth. In addition to the lining, the fit has a lot to do with how warm the jacket will keep you. A loose fitting jacket will allow cold air and moisture to get between you and the jacket, and it will allow heat to escape. Shoot for a jacket that is as snug as possible without being uncomfortable.

Most consider length more of a style feature than a functional feature, but top 10 snowboarding jackets should land very close to mid-hip. This is because a shorter jacket is likely to not cover enough for optimal warmth, and any longer could inhibit leg movement. Any top 10 list should consist mostly of jackets that meet these basic requirements. One or two may make it on the list for various reasons, but these are all common characteristics of a top 10 snowboarding jacket.
