Think metal wall sculptures belong only in the realm of modern art? Think again! Metal wall sculptures have a varied, multicultural history. From less modern but more recent art of the colonization of the American west to the art hanging in medieval castles to the metal wall artwork used for decorations by the ancient Greeks, this form of art has a diverse background and applications.
Most recently, the history of metal art can be traced to settlers in the American west. While many were tasteful, creative people, opportunities for art were limited to what could be found in the world around them. Copper and iron are often the metals used for these forms of art, and usually depict western scenes such as cowboys subduing a wild horse, desert animals such as coyotes, or logos for ranches that matched the brands on their animals. The logos displayed above ranches could be as simple as a word worked in metal or as elaborate as an entire scene worked in metal, often incorporating the name of the ranch.
Before that, castles frequently had metal wall sculptures on prominent display. These could range from ornately worked metal weapons to elaborately inlayed shields hanging in hallways and large gathering rooms. The shields were often engraved with either family crests or the emblems of particular heroes of that age. Depending on the region and time, weapons were also displayed on the wall, as well as more functional forms of wall art like embellished finely wrought candle holders.
This form of art goes back even farther than that, though. The ancient Greeks (so ancient, they are actually known as Minoans) used metal as an art form. Once again, the sculptures created as wall art served a variety of purposes from purely decorative to decorative and functional. One of the most popular forms of art was a partial sculpture, carved as though the animal or person were partially sunk within the flat plaque behind the sculpture.
This diverse background serves to explain why metal wall sculptures can be appropriate in any surroundings. They range from the ever evolving modern world of metal wall art to the replicas from the past. Some may select sculptures based on their own heritage, while others may find that sculptures modeled to correspond to certain periods from history best suit their own decor. Regardless of whether they’re used as decor in small cozy homes, offices, or grand mansions, these sculptures bring personality and history everywhere they go.
