Drug Detox is usually the first step a person should take that wants to overcome their drug addictions. There are several different kinds of detox methods that can be taken depending on a person's individual situation. Detoxification is not a cure for drug addiction; it is simply a step that is usually required to take to eliminate all signs of drugs in their body, and to prepare them for a rehabilitation center.

This kind of detoxification is usually performed in a controlled environment where different medications can be administered to help with the discomfort that comes from the withdrawal symptoms. Some of these symptoms may include: depression, vomiting, nausea, shaking, headaches, aggressiveness, hyperactivity, etc. The purpose of these types of facilities is to control the drive that has led to their dependence on drugs in the past.

There are several different methods that can be taken for this kind of drug detox; the first of many being medical detox. This is simply where a person gradually decreases their intake of drugs to lessen their dose each day. Another method is known as rapid detox. This form of detox is to take away some of the pain that comes from withdrawals into a shorter, condensed, period of time. It usually lasts only a few short hours while a person is asleep using anesthetics. They are given treatment drugs to help bypass some of their withdrawal symptoms. Ultra rapid detox is an even faster procedure that can last approximately only 30 minutes but can be extremely painful. There has been a controversy over this type of detox questioning its safety.

Usually when a person has decided to try drug detox, they are first evaluated to determine how much and which substances are located in their bodies. They then are guided into a detoxification plan depending upon their particular situation and what the doctor thinks would be most appropriate for that specific person. Once this plan has been completed, they are then guided to a rehabilitation center where they can receive the help that they need to guide them to the path of recovery.

Drug detox is the first stepping stone to overcoming addictions. It helps with the physical side of addictions and prepares a person for rehabilitation centers. The end goal is for a person to overcome all physical and psychological disorders that in the past led to their dependence on drugs.
