Many people are looking for help with their alcohol dependence with one of the first steps being alcohol detoxification. This is one of the first and most crucial steps a person can take in dealing with their alcoholism. It is a major problem that many have a hard time getting over. It is estimated that 8.1 million people in the United States are considered “alcoholics” and 140 million people worldwide.

Alcohol Detoxification is conducted to help a person dependent on alcohol, and often times crossed with other drugs, to deal with their withdrawals. This kind of help is there for people who have decided that they want and need help, and have a strong desire to abstain from alcohol. It doesn't in any way mean that they remove toxins from the body, it is simply a medication administered to them to help them lessen the burden of their withdrawals and in a controlled environment.

This kind of treatment usually lasts anywhere from three days to two weeks to help with the physical dependence side of the addiction. Most people find the first two days to be the most hard. During those days they should be closely monitored for any signs of withdrawal symptoms. Some of these symptoms include: major headaches, irritability, negative thoughts, aggressive behavior, impulsiveness, mild shakes, etc. All alcoholics who have previously been heavy drinkers will experience some degree of withdrawals.

After alcohol detoxification has been done, there are several facilities, counseling centers and on-line chat groups where a person can go to have the support group that they need in order to make their goal long-term. In the United States alone, there are several thousand of these types of facilities where a person can go for short-term, long-term or even inpatient hospitalization for help. These types of self help groups are usually required after detoxification to help maintain their alcohol absence. These types of rehabilitation centers work on not only on a person’s physical condition, but strive to help their psychological and emotional issues consuming them as well. Often additional medical treatment is needed afterward.

Alcohol detoxification has helped many people learn how to cope with the withdrawals that come from their goal of sobriety and abstaining from alcohol use. It is the first step, after deciding that a change needs to be made, to help a person become sober and make this goal last. Many people have found this method to be beneficial and successful in the end.
