From grandma’s chicken soup to a bulb of garlic to ginger ale, home remedies are as varied as the homes they come from. Every family has their own home remedies that they are fond of suggesting; some home remedies have become sayings like “Feed a cold and starve a fever.” Others like chicken soup are so overused they have become cliché.
Cliché does not mean, however, that do not work. Recently in the history of medical science, they confirmed that one of the home remedies, chicken soup, at least has some healing powers. It is good for a cold, especially the broth. The warmness of the liquid helps with the healing properties, and if the ill person is lucky, the love that goes into the making of the soup can be a powerful healer.
Garlic not only wards off vampires, it also wards off illness as well. There are questions as to how it does this. Some have suggested that it is garlic’s pungent smell that keeps people away from each other and thus stops the spread of germs. While there may be some truth in that, garlic also has some antimicrobial properties that help with both the throat when eaten and the gastro-intestinal tract. Another way that it may prevent disease is through the warding off of disease-carrying mosquitoes – this claim has not been substantiated by science and has only been anecdotally true.
Ginger ale with real ginger as a main ingredient is said to calm the stomach. The calming agents do not come just from the ginger root but also from the carbonation. Combined with saltine crackers, ginger ale becomes a powerful anti-nausea home remedy.
Lemon and honey in a cup of warm tea soothes the throat. The honey has a nice throat-coating property, and the lemon provides a dose of vitamin C that is supposed to ward off illness.
Vitamin C itself is highly regarded as a home remedy. Whether it comes from a vitamin supplement or copious amounts of orange juice, many people believe that vitamin C boosts the immune system.
Home remedies are a good way for people to deal with illness as long as they know when to seek medical treatment for serious conditions. While 80 percent of all diseases are self-limiting, some diseases will only continue to get worse under self-treatment. In today’s economic climate, it is important for people to be able to do something when they can’t afford to go see a doctor.
