Even if you do not think that you can afford it, Medigap is something that you shouldn’t pass up. As more and more people retire in the United States, there is less and less money to go around. Especially since this last recession, the economy has been struggling, and Medicare can’t cover all the expenses for every single retiree. Although Medicare coverage still covers most medical expenses, there is a lot it can’t do – and so there are gaps.

People are having to pay for more of their medical expenses – especially the extremely expensive procedures like cancer treatment, intense surgeries, and extremely bad injury treatments. Having a backup insurance provider, a supplementary policy, ensures that you do not have to worry about paying most, or even any, of the gaps left behind by your Medicare insurance coverage.

While these gaps may not seem like a lot of money, or even if you do not anticipate having very many medical expenses during your retirement, purchasing a Medigap insurance policy is in your best interest. Illness and injury are always unexpected – and you definitely do not want to get caught paying tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills that Medicare just couldn’t cover. In the long run, it is cheaper to buy a supplementary insurance policy and pay a premium that is way smaller than any medical expenses you could be paying. Getting Medigap will save you money and save your peace of mind as well.

There are several things you can do if you do not think you can afford a supplementary insurance policy. First, shop around. There are always more insurance policies out there than you would think. And there are all sorts of pricing options. Some policies have discounts based on health, age, gender, and other factors like those. Some policies may not cover all the gaps, but will cost less, and you may be willing to take the risk for the cheaper price. Most private insurance companies provide some form of Medigap, or supplementary Medicare insurance, and you can always ask at your current insurance provider to get their opinion on the best places to look for affordable Medigap insurance.

However, the important thing is to find a policy that covers all the gaps in your Medicare insurance so you don’t have to worry about paying tons of money for treatment and medical service. Don’t worry – affordable Medigap insurance is out there!
