When you retire at age 65 and start receiving Medicare insurance, there are a few things you need to be aware of – for example, supplemental insurance policies that are commonly known as Medigap. When you have Medicare Plans both A and B, you are eligible for Medigap. The reason you should definitely look into Medigap is because there are definite gaps in the coverage that you get from Medicare, and it can be extremely expensive to pay for all the gaps on your own.

For example, Medicare Plan A (the plan that provides insurance for hospital services) will pay almost entirely for 60 day hospital visits, but there is a deductible that the patient has to pay – it is around $1,100. This can be an unmanageable amount for some people, and this is when Medigap insurance policies come in handy. Most Medigap policies will pay that deductible without you having to lift a finger. These policies make it easier to keep your retirement funds for the rest of your retirement, and not for enormous medical expenses.

Another plus of having a supplemental Medigap insurance to go along with your Medicare is that it will also cover medical expenses from the Plan B part of your Medicare insurance. Plan B is the section that pays for non-hospital medical expenses, such as in- and out-patient services and supplies and also for physician services as they are needed. Medigap can save you from paying for unexpected medical expenses like these that Medicare does not cover.

Be sure to read the policies for your Medicare coverage to know what to have covered by supplemental Medigap insurance. If you are not careful, you will end up with a Medigap insurance policy that costs you a lot of money for services that are already covered by your Medicare account. You need to be sure that the services and costs that your supplemental Medigap insurance is covering are not also being covered by your Medicare insurance. That kind of mistake can cost you a lot of money in premiums and in paying for the gaps that the Medigap does not cover.

Medigap can be an extremely useful insurance policy, as long as you know that gaps in your Medicare coverage will be paid for by your Medigap policy. While it is true that not all gaps can or will be covered by Medigap, most are, and the more expensive ones are usually among them. It pays to make sure you get the service that you need.
