What is the overall purpose of a chemical peel? A chemical peel is considered a minimal invasive producer that is used to help people look younger, and their skin to look rejuvenated.
The main purposes for having a chemical peel done is to remove fine lines, wrinkles, discoloration spots, acne scars, and any other facial imperfection.
In essence what a peel does is melt away layers of skin until a layer of skin is reach that has no scars or blemishes. New skin then grows in blemish free. This does take time and like laser resurfacing chemical peels do have some risks. The deeper your peel goes the higher chance you have of experiencing the more negative side effects.
Depending on the depth of your chemical peel you may experience mild to moderate stinging. Often times a cool cloth is applied during the procedure to help with the discomfort and in cases of a deep chemical peel anesthesia can be used. Other side effects that patients experience with peels include redness, swelling, pain, numbness, blistering, scarring, and infection. Due to these side effects many potential patients are reluctant to go ahead with a chemical peel procedure. Chemical peels can also be expensive which is another reason why many people decide not to go ahead with the procedure, however not all are this expensive but not all chemical peels will be performed as well either. However after looking at the risks and decide you want to go ahead with a chemical peel here is an outline of how the procedure will go. Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed with an agent that removes excess oils while the eyes and hair are protected. One or more chemical solutions such as glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, or carblolic acid, are applied to small areas on your skin. These chemical peel applications produce a controlled wound enabling new regenerated skin to appear.
What to expect after a chemical peel.
Depending on the depth of your chemical peel your skin may be sensitive to sun for a couple days and you will be given a cream to keep your face hydrated. However if you did a much more in depth chemical peel you may be given a bandage placed on the areas were your skin and will remain for a day or two. You will then be given a cream and you will need to keep the area clean so not to be infected. The recovery time could be anywhere form 1-21 days.
