It is important to find the right drum parts whether they are being used to build a new drum from scratch or to repair an old drum.

For what appears to be such a simple instrument, drums have many different parts. There are drum lugs, tension rods, drum hoops, vent holes, tom mounts, and several others. These are in addition to the shell and the head.

Drum lugs come in many shapes and sizes and can affect the sound of a drum. It is important to find low mass lugs as they will allow the drum to resonate better.
Tension rods connect the hoop to the lugs. Rods made for marching bands are able to withstand more vigorous use than other rods.

Drum hoops are important drum parts because they can also affect the way that the drum sounds. There are three types of hoops – flanged, die cast and wood. Flanged are better with tuning. Die cast can provide more even tuning but are less likely to account for the imperfect shape of the drum itself. Wood hoops can add to the resonance of the drum.

Finding someone who is both willing and able to discuss the different properties of the parts of the drum and how they affect the instrument itself can be a difficult proposition especially if the buyer is going into the instrument shop with no experience. While many professionals are able to discuss the parts of a drum, they may have a hard time conveying what that means for the instrument to a lay person or newbie.

Having a friend who knows about drums and how to build them would be helpful. Unfortunately, not everyone knows someone who knows drums. That makes finding someone in the business even more important.

Drum parts aren’t something to be taking lightly. They can be the difference between a dull thud and a bright beat. Not that either of those is wrong all of the time, but what a musician wants is to create that sound on purpose, not because he or she has a terribly built instrument that requires that he or she creates that sound.
Finding the right drum parts doesn’t have to be burdensome. The internet can help the beginner get the lingo right and figure out what is needed and why it is needed. It can also teach him or her the difference the various version of parts will make in the sound of the instrument.
