Choosing the correct housing is an important aspect to caring for a guinea pig. Guinea pig cages need to allow the animal enough room to play and exercise, because they do spend the majority of their time in their cages. It is also important that the cage is equipped with the proper supplies. The right items in the cage keep the guinea pig from getting bored, which can have a negative effect on the animal. Make sure whatever toys or accessories you include in the cage do not take up too much space, you want to leave the little furry creature plenty of room.

The right accessories and toys are important. Guinea pig cages should include a nest box, which is a good place for them to hide. You also need a heavy ceramic food dish, a hay rack, wood shavings, ramps and furniture. Toys are important as well and include items such as tubes, tunnels, wooden chew blocks and hanging bird toys. Guinea pigs like to stay busy and play with the items in their cage. It is important to offer them a variety of items to keep them busy and active. This will also ensure good health for your pet.

The placement of the home is important as well. Place guinea pig cages where there is not a lot of noise and distraction. This may scare the animal and it will hide instead of being active and playful. Keep the cage away from direct sunlight and make sure the room temperature is not over 75 degrees Fahrenheit and under 50 degrees Fahrenheit. It has to be kept indoors to ensure the temperature is within these ranges. You should also choose a well-ventilated area to place the cage. Following these steps will keep your guinea pig safe and healthy.

When choosing a safe home for your pet there are some things you need to look for. Guinea pig cages need to be made of safe, escape proof materials, a latching door or lid and no wire mesh flooring. Guinea pigs can chew up wooden cages, so the best choice for a cage is one made of plastic, stainless steel and wire or a combination of the three. Mesh flooring will hurt a guinea pig’s feet. If you cage has a wire floor use a mat. A latching door helps keep your pet in and other animals out. A safe home is a happy home.
