The Super Mario Brothers video games have been popular for years. Even the newer generations love Mario. This has been spurred on by the continuing creation of Mario games for newer gaming systems. Creating a situation where parents and children alike have something in common, one thing the parents had that the children do not is the ability to watch a Mario show on Saturday morning. Though short-lived, three different cartoon series based on the Super Mario Brothers video games became popular in the late 80s and early 90s. The first two only lasted from September to December in their respective years, but still produced several episodes that were re-aired for a time.

The first of these shows, the Super Mario Bros Super Show, used the old style layout of having real people introduce the cartoons. In this Mario show, non-animated plumbers Mario and Luigi met many adventures that were shown before, between, and after Mario cartoons. Typically whatever was going on had to do with a visitor to their home, creating great opportunities for guest spots. For example, in one episode the brothers demonstrate to Nicole Eggert of "Charles in Charge" and "Baywatch" fame how to unclog a sink. In another episode, a young lady finds her way to their home claiming to be an orphan, only to have her parents show up to claim her by the end of the show.

The second attempt at a Mario show was "Captain N and the New Super Mario World." This was a more traditional cartoon format, but the stories were still the same basic themes and plots surrounding the toadstool realm. The last attempt at a Mario themed cartoon was "The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3. This was based on the third video game from the series which allowed Mario and Luigi to fly. On this Mario show, as in the game, the brothers could turn into flying raccoons which gave a whole other option for adventures and storylines.

With the invention of online video streaming, it has become possible for parents to share the joys of watching a Mario show with their children. Safe, clean television is hard to come by these days, and these cartoons are full of good lessons and good clean fun. They are also something that parents can share with their children as the parents reminisce and their children enjoy a new viewing experience. Though many kids today enjoy Mario themed games and other products, few have seen an old school Mario cartoon.
