Among lizards, the most popular pet is the iguana. They can make great pets, but like any other pet, they require specific care. This care can be different than that required for more common pets. They are not low maintenance animals, and there are many differences between them and other pets, especially socially. For example, if you have a pet iguana you should of course play with it.
However, playing with an iguana is very much different than playing with a dog or a cat.
Iguanas do not really get the concept of play or toys. Since they do seem to be attracted to the color green, it can be helpful to choose green objects to use during play time. The best way to begin play with a pet iguana is to try to engage it at different time of the day. If it seems responsive at a particular time or to a particular activity, then keep it up. Generally they enjoy climbing, so the best way to keep them entertained is to be sure they have plenty of rocks and limbs to climb on in their dwelling.
An iguana home can be an aquarium or a cage. While the most popular is an aquarium, a cage can actually be a better fit as it offers more climbing opportunities. Whichever you choose, it is essential that is it large enough for your pet to roam and climb at leisure. A light to provide heat is also necessary, as iguanas are cold blooded creatures and cannot regulate their body heat. Keeping the aquarium or cage clean is also important, but do not use any chemicals, as these creatures are very sensitive and just a whiff of some chemicals can kill them.
Feeding a pet iguana is not that difficult as they are not picky eaters. They eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, but they will even eat the ones that are not good for them. Generally, leafy green vegetables are good, but iceberg lettuce should be avoided. Sometimes iguanas become aggressive. Usually this has to do with natural cycles. For example, a male iguana will become aggressive during his mating cycle. The best thing to do in this situation is to simply leave him along until it passes. Iguanas can make great pets, but to be a great owner it is vital to know how to best care for them.
